Boldly Going Where No Disc Has Gone Before
The Best Sci-fi Movies On Blu-ray - Part 1
Boldly Going Where No Disc Has Gone Before

The realm of science-fiction includes such a wide range of subjects that we've had to focus our efforts on the ones that define the genre the most (and even then the list was so big we had to split it into two parts). But have no fear, there are some interesting new films to go alongside the classics. With that held firmly in mind we kick off with recent release Moon. Sam Rockwell stars as a lonely astronaut on a moon station who is one day confronted by his angry doppelgänger. Hilarious hi-jinx ensue. (Okay, perhaps not quite). This bendy Silent Running homage is a low budget gem by Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie. The Blu-ray looks spectacular and it comes with two (two!) director commentaries, a visual effects feature, making of and two audience Q&As.

Guys, you've got the Human Torch onboard. This job should be easy.

Moon has a lot in common with Sunshine, Danny Boyle's impressive first attempt at sci-fi after passing on Alien Resurrection ten years earlier. The story of Sunshine by 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland sees a small crew travelling through space carrying a bomb that will hopefully reignite the dying sun and save the Earth from nuclear winter. Boyle's stunning visuals and John Murphy's score will show off your Blu-ray capabilities nicely while extras on the disc include commentaries, an alternate ending, web diaries and deleted scenes.

Question: Why does outer space make people crazy? Answer: So we end up with films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solyaris, Solaris, Alien and, um, Event Horizon. Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece was shot on 70mm so, as you can imagine, the level of detail on Blu-ray is incredible. Warners also spoil us with an uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio track and special features like The Making of a Myth documentary, the influence 2001 had on other film-makers and a previously unseen 1966 interview with Kubrick. Sadly Andrei Tarkovsky's Solyaris (1972), Steven Soderbergh's remake Solaris (2002) and the Alien Quadrilogy aren't available, though the latter is scheduled to debut on Blu-ray in late 2010. That just leaves Event Horizon, the best Paul W.S Anderson film by a mile. It's an effective, stylish horror that was obviously a big influence on later efforts like Sunshine and Pandorum. Extras include a jovial commentary by Anderson, storyboards, deleted scenes and a 90 minute making of.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is more of a straight action movie but the Decepticons and Autobots are spacemen of a kind, hence their inclusion on our list. Plus any film with Megan Fox in skimpy clothes is worth a look in HD. The script ain't up to much (this from the same guys wrote Star Trek for J.J. Abrams?) but the effects are jaw-droppingly good, the DTS-HD 5.1 sound kicks ass and there's a whole separate disc dedicated to special features. As well as Bay's rapid-fire commentary there's a 2-hour, 7-part making of, deleted scenes and Bay's breakfast regime is probably even in there somewhere. The first Transformers has equally good extras on Blu-ray and is easily the better of the two films, so buy that first if you haven't already.
