Director James Cameron has let slip the US release date for the initial Blu-ray release of his epic flick and Oscar fave Avatar. As expected though, it's unlikely to feature any of the 3D effects that blinded cinema-goers into thinking it was a good film (oh okay, maybe I'm being a tad cynical on that one - or I'm just a miserable sod).
Cameron was quoted as saying "We'll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that's our plan as of right now, and that'll be pretty much bare bones. And then we'll do a value-added DVD and a 3D Blu-ray in I think November sometime." Presumably there won't even be a cardboard glasses, basic 3D cut on the disc either.
While 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment were unable to give confirmation of the date, nor was there any talk of a Region 2/B release date, the April time frame seems about right, coming just over a month after the Oscar ceremony, where Avatar will surely pick up a few gongs. Meanwhile, the 3D version in November should coincide with greater availability of 3D compatible hardware and prove to be a popular stocking filler double-dip.
